What Every Motorcyclist Need Is a Helmet

When we think of a motorcycle, we think of a speed biker with the steel monster riding across the open plains of Texas or maybe California looking down on those helpless tourists who may not be wearing helmets. We don’t often think about the fact that every motorcyclist out there needs a helmet to protect his or her head and brain from injury in case of an accident. We don’t need to think of this though because we understand that motorbikes are typically much more dangerous than cars are, and therefore it’s the rider’s responsibility to make sure that they ride properly. One way to do that is by wearing a helmet. So, if you’re going on a motorcycle trip and you’re not sure whether you need one or not, read on.

Helmets are made for just about every head type out there. If you’re an upright driver with a long torso, you’re going to want a full face helmet. This is one that covers the entire head and neck area and is also designed to go over the back. If you’re tall, you’ll also want a motorcycle helmet that goes over the top of your head and to the side a bit so that if you happen to come to an Impressionist painting close enough, you can still see the beautiful graphics.

There are also helmets for the female rider. If you’ve ever been to a bike rally, you might have noticed that the women riders have small, functional accessories sitting behind their helmets. These are usually wind screens that keep the wind from hitting the face, but there are also helmets that are designed with the woman in mind. The vents in these are designed to allow air to flow and keep the woman cool, which is important when you’re riding at over fifty miles per hour. Proper clothing is also important when on a motorcycle.

Another piece of clothing that every motorcyclist need is a good jacket. One of the first pieces of equipment that any biker will want to purchase is a jacket. It’s not just a coat; it’s the basics, the things that keep you warm and dry. Jackets vary greatly in price and style, but the fundamental elements are all the same. A good leather jacket should have padding to protect the elbows and wrists and should have some kind of ventilation to keep the rider cool.

The next thing every motorcyclist need is a helmet. A full face helmet is the safest option, but there are also helmets that go down over the back or that go over the top. Each style has its pros and cons, and it’s up to you to determine which is best for your own safety.

It’s important to remember that no matter what kind of motorcycle you ride, a good helmet will protect you. If you ride sport bikes, a full face helmet is your best bet. If you ride touring bikes, a shell helmet will do. Whatever your style, a helmet is your best line of defense.
